In the last seven days, the leader of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, was assassinated. Israel has invaded Lebanon and Iran has launched almost 200 missiles at Israel.
Western and regional countries, led by the United States, have tried to calm the situation. The UN Security Council called for an “immediate end” to the fighting and the G7, which includes the U.S., U.K. and Germany, called for “restraint.”
But those efforts have not worked and the Middle East is closer than ever to all-out war.
Here’s how the last week went
Friday night: Nasrallah is assassinated.
At dusk on September 27, southern Beirut was hit by large explosions. Several buildings were destroyed, leaving a large crater in the ground. Clouds of dust and debris filled the sky, visible from all over the city. The attack, which targeted a subway bunker, killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
Nasrallah had not been seen in public for years for fear of assassination by Israel. His death ended the hope of calming the situation, which seemed possible a few hours earlier.
A U.S. proposal for a 21-day cease-fire had been discussed at the UN General Assembly in New York. Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, even said they were “open to ideas.”
But hours after the attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu returned early from the UN and any hope of diplomacy disappeared.
